It only turns on when you are adjusting the settings, it automatically shuts off after a few seconds so that it will not detract from the fire display of the insert.

The 26" Dimplex Multi-Fire XHD Plug-in Electric Firebox Log Bed - XHD26L, can be inserted safely into any entertainment center. It is plug and play and features fan forced heat so it will not damage any electronics above it or near it.

Does this fireplace insert have the Opti-Myst feature?

No it does not feature Opti-Myst which is a "fog machine" type of effect that gives it the illusion that it is "smoking".
