Unplug your electric fireplace from the wall as an added safety precaution. Give the bulbs 10-15 minutes to cool down so that they aren’t hot when you go to remove them.

On the back of your electric insert you should find a Rear Access Panel. This panel is usually held in place by a few screws. Refer to your owner’s manual to determine how to access the light bulbs on your specific model. Some may have a panel that opens on the front of your fireplace.

Locate and replace the light bulbs. Once you open the door, they should be easy to get to. Rotate the bulbs in a counterclockwise motion to remove them.Note: Some electric fireplaces uses halogen light bulbs. If this is the case, be sure that you do not touch the bulbs with your bare hands. Your skin contains natural oils that will weaken the surface of the glass, resulting in a decreased lifespan and a dim lighting. You should wear gloves or use a napkin whenever handling halogen light bulbs.

Install your new bulb by screwing it in a clockwise motion. To figure out what type of bulb you need, refer to the section following the 6 step guide to replacing an electric fireplace light bulb.

Secure the rear access door with the appropriate screws.

Plug in your electric fireplace and turn on the flame effect. You’re flames should be shimmering and dancing like they were on the day that you first got it!

Determining What Type of Bulb You Need

The type of light bulb you need is dependent on the model that you have. This should be listed in the owner’s manual that came with your electric fireplace. In the case that you have discarded or misplace your owner’s manual, contact your manufacturer directly to find out.

You can always take the old bulb down to the local hardware store and ask them if they can identify it. Often times, there will be a marking on the bulb that will indicate the type of light bulb you need for your electric fireplace. Normally electric fireplaces use 40 watt clear, chandelier or candelabra E-12 light bulbs.

Electric Fireplace Replacement Light Bulb

Important for all electric fireplace owners: Why You Should Never Use Extension Cords on Electric Fireplaces.

How often Should You Change Your Electric Fireplace Light Bulbs?

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. When you notice that the flames on your electric insert are beginning to dim, you should replace all bulbs at the same time to balance brightness across the entire unit. This will also be the most convenient approach as you will only have to go through the installation process a single time rather than doing so every time a bulb goes out. All of your bulbs have the same life span so if one goes out, the others will be fading soon.

How Long Will these Light Bulbs Last?

The life span on your electric fireplace light bulbs is entirely dependent on individual usage. You should expect these bulbs to last jus like any other home lighting fixture. Typical incandescent light bulbs provide 1,000-2,000 hours of lighting. This being said, electric fireplace light bulbs usually need to be replace every couple of years.

Have more questions about your electric fireplace?
