What does firebox look like when flames are not turned on? Can you see the logs? Does it have a timer?

The firebox will still show the logs but the logs will not be glowing - the logs will only pulsate and glow like real burning logs when you have the flames turned on. It does not have a timer however you can use the remote control to turn it off whenever you wish.

es it will, that is because the rear of the unit is hollow which provides zero interference for a flush placement of the fireplace cabinet against the wall.

Yes, you can place this item directly on the carpet without endangering the carpet whatsoever. It is an electric fireplace that pushes heat into the room via fan forced heat and does not feature real fire so it is safe to operate around children and pets as well.
