Why can’t you set a tv on top? Does the mantle get hot?

It is because the mantle is very narrow (only 14" in depth) and will have a risk of tipping forward/falling forward. If you plan on placing a TV on top, I would recommend that you anchor the mantel to the studs behind the wall so that it will not have a chance to tip forward.
